The Ely Shoshone, Duckwater Shoshone, and the Confederated Tribes of the Goshute Reservation — a coalition representing about 1,500 enrolled tribal members — are lobbying the federal government to designate nearly 40 square miles (100 square kilometers) as Bahsahwahbee National Monument. He testified in a multi-decade legal battle alongside ranchers, local officials and environmental groups who all opposed the project by the Southern Nevada Water Authority. Protecting water for sacred trees is not something the agency had previously done, Sullivan said. Even if the land becomes a national monument, the water beneath Bahsahwahbee would remain under the state’s jurisdiction. The Southern Nevada Water Authority supports a monument designation that allows for the continuation of existing ranching and agricultural activities, said Bronson Mack, water authority spokesman.

CNN —Economist Larry Summers, the former Obama and Clinton official, is joining an initial, revamped OpenAI board, as the company welcomes back CEO Sam Altman just days after he was ousted by the previous board. Summers and Taylor, for example, both sit on other corporate boards. Those three directors have significantly more experience than much of the previous board, which abruptly fired Altman late on Friday only to see an employee revolt and wide-ranging repercussions in the tech and business worlds. Days later, OpenAI said it had reached an agreement in principle for Altman to return. “We are collaborating to figure out the details,” the company posted on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

Some areas, including northern Canada and some of Greenland, show temperatures more than 6 degrees Fahrenheit (3.3 degrees Celsius) above average. Dollar General cut its profit estimate for 2023 on Thursday. The first of two jarring pieces of evidence comes in the form of first-quarter earnings from Dollar General. The fact that they're not immune to a broader pullback in consumer spending is a big red flag for the US economy. New York CNN Business —Former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers said on Thursday that it’s “substantially” more likely than not that the United States will enter a recession next year. But this recession will likely be relatively short and mild. There is currently a 98.1% chance of a global recession next year, according to a probability model run by Ned Davis Research. “I think the Fed has to do what is necessary to contain inflation,” said Summers, who has been critical of the Fed in the past. But there are “no silver bullets or miracle cures,” said Summers — especially not in the three weeks ahead of US midterm elections.
